Fairy Barracuda DR306
This image is to illustrate the type only and is not the actual aircraft involved.*
Belonging to 769 Naval Air Squadron, crashed on 15th December 1945 while on a routine cross-country navigational exercise out of RNAS Rattray in Scotland. The Barracuda is believed to be on the return leg of the flight when it entered cloud. The Pilot descended in an attempt to confirm his position and the aircraft collided with the lower slopes of Whernside. The Barracuda hit the hill where there was not much of a slope and it slid to a halt mostly intact; the Pilot walked away with just minor injuries.
It was broken up and left in situ but over the years most of it has been removed by the usual suspects, including a now defunct Museum(preservation society LOL); 'recovered and preserved' which when translated means 'stolen and lost'.
